Hackers, also referred as cybercriminals, break into your computer for a variety of reasons. They can steal, alter, or delete information that you value. As opposed to other thieves, who usually have legitimate reasons for the stolen goods hackers have ulterior motives. They are particularly concerned about the unauthorized access to sensitive information. This could happen before you realize that something is wrong.
The three main steps to ensure the security of your computer software are firewalls, passwords and protection against viruses. If you follow these best methods, it’s less likely that your computer will be compromised by malware or hackers (software which encrypts data and demands payment for its unlocking).
Change the name of the administrator account. Make sure to choose a strong password that contains lower- and uppercase numbers, letters and computer symbols. Do not use a password that is simple like 1234 as hackers could use automated software to hack passwords that are simple to guess in just a few minutes.
Update your operating system and other programs. The majority of software updates include security fixes to help protect against hackers. Install all patches, and enable automatic updates if available, to reduce the amount of time you are exposed to hackers.
If you own a laptop or any other portable device that’s not being used, ensure that the drive is protected. This is especially important for UF students.
